One is a hand made Kim Hancock traditional guitar that sells for $4,500 new and a 2002 José Ramirez 4e, these are great guitars but I have two of them at the moment and lastly a beautiful 1890’s Italian Rossi romantic guitar that’s in great condition and plays very well.

To kick start the new year the Sydney classical guitar society are having there annual Summer school
It will feature Pavel Steidl and be held at the Ascham school Edgecliff.

I’m also very excited to offer one of the famous Matthias Damman sandwich top guitars for sale. Dammann's guitars are used by Manuel Barrueco and David Russell and his waiting list currently exceeds ten years.

I also have just received a mint condition 1965 Spruce/ Brazilian Jose Ramirez. This guitar represents the Belle Epoch of 20th century guitar.

The Robin Moyes guitars are beautifully made and feature a carbon radial braced top similar to Simon Marty. Ashley Sanders, along with David Argent is John Prices protégés. His guitars feature a unique body shape and are great value for money due to the fact he is still establishing himself in the market.
Kim Lissarrague is now exporting his guitars to the Japan and the States I’ll have his latest lattice braced guitar here next week.

Jason Elazzi has just finished his latest concert guitar. It features beautiful South American rosewood back and sides and French polished Cedar top. The sound is similar to a Daniel Friederich.

ricksguitarnewsLast week I had a visit from Jason Waldron I’m currently selling two of Jason’s rare master guitars. A 1966 Spruce/ Brazilian Fleta And a 1970 Cedar / Brazilian Hernandez y Aguado
Both guitars are under $40,000US and represent two of the finest examples of these famous makers work.
Although the guitars cost more than most of my client’s cars, they are blue chip investments and last a lifetime. There is nothing better for your right hand technique.

Speaking of Master guitars I also have for sale at my Sydney office a mint condition 1986 Spruce/ Brazilian French polished Segovia model Hauser.
This is a fabulous guitar and comes with a letter from Hauser 111 stating among other things how his father Hauser 11 helped with the guitar and that the timber used was 80 years old and from his Grandfathers stock. The price of this 20 year old time capsule is US $16,500 or local price $24,500 Aus including GST etc.

New Arrivals
Spring is here at Bronte beach. It’s brought some perfect weather and some great new guitars. I finally received delivery of the new Robin Moyes and Kim Lissarrague guitars.
Robin Moyes who has worked with Simon Marty and made guitars for Tommy Emmanuel and Slava and Lenny Grigoryan, is finally in full swing producing his own classical arch back guitars. They have a huge tone and are beautifully crafted. They feature a radial braced cedar top, slightly raised fingerboard and Gilbert tunners. I've now posted MP3's of the guitars embeded in the photos, I hope they don't take to long to download.
I also have a Dieter Hopf La Portenosa the same model that Alexandre Lagoya used. It’s very even and responsive and beautifully made. Also of note is the 1996 Manuel Reyes (senior) You don’t often see Reyes classicals. This is one of the best Cedar Spanish guitars I’ve had the pleasure of owning. It’s very reasonably priced due to a repaired crack on the top.

ricksguitarnewsIn the last couple of weeks we’ve seen some great international guitarists pass through Sydney. Oscar Guzman gave a great Flamenco concert at the Sydney conservatorium of music.
Izhar Elias has also been touring with his 1812 C. Guadagnini guitar. As well as playing period music Izhar also plays chamber music and purchased one of Kim Lissarrague’s new lattice braced guitars. Kim is definitely the maker to watch. He is in his early 20’s. Izhar chose Kim’s guitar over many other great Australian guitars many of which were more than twice the price of the Lissarrague.

ricksguitarnewsSorry I haven’t posted any news lately. My wife Anthea gave birth to our second boy Felix last month. Mother and child are doing well.

Other new arrivals are a 2000 Spruce Dan Kellaway, 2004 Cedar John Price, 2004 David Argent, 2005 Cedar Gerard Gilet, 2005 Cedar Kim Lissarrague and a mint 1973 José Ramirez.

I’ve been spending the weekend restringing and setting up a couple of the 19th century guitars I have for sale. I fitted nylgut strings to a Parisian Gand guitar. This time capsule took me back to 1830’s and like HG Wells character I was surprised by what I found.

Firstly the butterfly tuners work so well, what a great idea that has been lost to the guitar world, although I wonder if it wasn’t an inspiration for the Floyd Rose locking nut.
The neck on this guitar is very slim and has more in common with a contemporary electric guitar than a classical. The volume also surprised me; this guitar is louder than many contemporary classical guitars.

The Gand is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship with Spruce top and satin wood back and sides. It features a double top construction where the maker lines the back with a spruce soundboard to add stiffness and increase projection.

The second guitar I restrung was the 1850’s English Panormo copy.
This guitar is a very robust instrument so I used contemporary strings Savarez Corums standard tension. It inspired me to play Sor's Mozart variations. This guitar also features stunning Brazilian Rosewood with double top construction and the famous Rance 1850 tuners.

The Darwin international classical guitar festival is on again in July this year.
The Sydney acoustic guitar festival will be held at Eora college Redfern in June or July. I’ll also be attending the Frankston Guitar festival in Victoria on the 18th to 20th of March.

The London International Guitar Festival 05 will present some of the most inspirational artists from Venezuela, the US, the Czech Republic, the UK and Spain.

The LIGF05 will play host to the 81-year-old guitar legend Alirio Diaz, making a rare London appearance. On Saturday 23 July, John Williams will Speak Out on musical matters and the guitar, and will play duets with LIGF Artistic Director Carlos Bonell.

Carlos Bonell will present a gala concert with special guests. Czech sensation Pavel Steidl will make his eagerly awaited London debut. Brad Richter, composer, arranger, and winner of the US National Fingerpicking Championship, will play his evocative music inspired by the American Southwest.

Resident orchestra the Chamber Ensemble of London will show why London orchestras are still the greatest in the world. There will be a magical candle-lit guitar concertos concert at St Martin-in-the-Fields, with soloists Gary Ryan and Carlos Bonell.

Venezuelan music will be one of the themes of the LIGF05. John Williams‚s best-selling CD of Venezuelan music El Diablo Suelto will be discussed. This CD contains arrangements by the Venezuelan Alirio Diaz, who was his teacher when he was a teenager. You will be able to see and hear these two great artists in the Festival, as well as Venezuelan folk musicians who will stun and delight with their improvisation and virtuosity.

Tutors will include Carlos Bonell and Gary Ryan, both professors at the Royal College of Music. There will be masterclasses and private lessons for students and professionals which will run during the day from Monday July 25 through Friday July 29; and an evening summer school for dedicated amateurs, from Monday July 18 through Friday July 22.

The Adelaide hills, as well as being a wine growing district is also the home to several luthiers. Jim Redgate, John Price, David Argent and Ashley Sanders.

The big news at the Guitar Centre this month is at arrival of a 1875 Antonio de Torres Guitar. It’s number 2 of the second Epoch. A fabulous old guitar from the most famous maker of Spanish guitars. It came from the Carrol Van Fegerlan collection in Canada and I’m offering it for sale along with a collection of thirty 18th and 19th century guitars including Staufer’s from Germany, Lacote’s from France, Panormo’s from England and Fabricatore’s from Italy.
Other new inventory this month includes a mint condition 1992 cedar Eugen Philp. Eugen was Greg Smallman’s only apprentice who unfortunately passed away in the late 1990’s. This is a unique opportunity to acquire the Smallman sound for a reasonable price.

The Sydney Classical guitar summer school starts tomorow. Dan Kellaway
who will be the luthier in residence at the summer school called in today to pick up his guitar that he kindly let me play over the last week. Dan's guitars are great and well worth checking out. I've played one myself since 1996.
Other guitar news I have a very good 1976 Cedar Daniel Friederich guitar comming in the next week. These guitars are very hard to get and going for astronomical prices. Speaking of Friederich I have some great photos of his workshop that I'll be posting up on Simon Rovis-Hermans web page. Simon is a young western Australian Luthier who recently spent some time with Friedrich while on a Australia council study tour of France.
